Some cultures believe a ruby could be worn as personal protection, and that wearing the stone on the left side (heart side) of the body, would allow the bearers to live peacefully. Ancient Burmese soldiers even had the stone inserted in their flesh to protect them from swords and spears. Not something we would recommend!
